Cordel: Civic is for Belize City, Not U.D.P.

Thirty-two million dollars later – though in many quarters that figure is far more – the Belize Civic Center on Central American Boulevard is scheduled to be opened early in 2018.  According to Belize Infrastructure Limited, while physical works are close to completion, the search has begun for a private management company to take over the affairs of what is a publicly-owned building.  The company would preside over time on the basketball and volleyball courts and concerts and other events scheduled.  But the idea does not sit well with former Minister of Sports and Lake Independence area rep Cordel Hyde, whose constituency does not sit far from the site. He told approving P.U.P. supporters during Saturday’s convention that as far as he is concerned, the party will not honor any such managerial contract when it next takes office.

Cordel Hyde, Deputy Party Leader, P.U.P.

“They spent thirty-two million dollars to build the Civic – thirty-two million dollars. And you know what they will do? Ordinary people can’t use the Civic. Like when you were younger and your ma buy wa big sofa set and she covered it with big plastic and she put a sheet on top of it and you could only watch it, you couldn’t sit in it? That’s what Civic is about. Thirty-two million dollars and ordinary people can’t go in there – something wrong with that! But you know who can go in there? The lee handful a cronies weh dehn di give fi manage it, weh dehn di give Civic to. Fi we taxpayers’ money, dehn di give to a handful of their people. Thirty-two million dollars for Civic, and ordinary people can’t go in there; something wrong with that. Now unu noh fi accept that, you know; Belizean people need fi stop accept these things from the Government because dehn things wrong and we need to stand up. And, when P.U.P. win the elections, if they dare give a contract fi manage that place, we will tear up the contract and kick them out, because Civic da fi the people of Belize!”
