Marijuana-Loving Minors to be Counseled

The topic of marijuana possession and consumption, in the days following the decriminalization of a small handful, remains at the center of public discourse simply because there are still more questions than answers.  Last Tuesday, the church raised serious objections to the passage of the new law, though it was too little, too late.  With the enactment of that piece of legislation just two days later, several questions have been put to Attorney General Michael Peyrefitte, including the issue of weed and minors.  According to the AG, government’s policy on minors found in possession of marijuana is stringent, particularly because parents are obligated to look after the wellbeing of their children in the context of drugs and alcohol.  Senior Superintendent Marco Vidal also weighed in on the discussion.

“We’re gonna be very, very, very strict on minors.  The government is not promoting the use of marijuana and especially we’re not promoting it, we’re not legalizing it at all.  If you’re a minor and you’re in possession of marijuana you will have to be detained, you will have to be arrested; it’s just that when you go to court the court will say, “Okay, good.  Given this new piece of legislation, you young man or young lady, we’re gonna put you through a counseling program.”  In the coming weeks or days the Minister of Police is going to set forth some regulations that would say what is the appropriate counseling, what is the appropriate guidance.  Until then, the juvenile court will use whatever measures they use currently to punish minors who have committed offenses.  If we notice that a minor is a repeat offender, he keeps getting caught with possession or smoking marijuana, then the minister will also make regulations as to how that person can go through some kind of drug treatment program or recovery program.  And we are going to bring the parents into this, we’re saying that if the government has to keep using resources because you’re not being a good parent and we keep having to counsel and treat your child for an addiction, we’re going to have you foot the bill or some of the expenses for doing so, because you are to keep your children away from marijuana, from cigarettes, from alcohol, but we are making it extra stringent when it comes to the marijuana.”

Marco Vidal

Sr. Supt. Marco Vidal, Commander, Eastern Division South

“We know that if it is that an offense is committed by a child or a minor then we will seek the appropriate advice on how to deal with the matter, given that it’s a new legislation or amendment, sorry.”

These people are living in space. If it had been that in our country the family structure is good then it might be different but in Belize there are a large number of parents that can not control their own children . Some of these parents go to the USA leaving their children with relatives or grand parent. This is why many children end in the streets.
