NAC Gets Youths Talking about HIV/AIDS

The National Aids Commission in collaboration with the United Nations Development Program engaged the youth population in dialog and program development given the HIV/Aids statistics in the country. Today at the Biltmore Plaza, thirty youth leaders from different organizations and schools participated in the forum, which is expected to foster awareness within communities among members of the vulnerable population. Communications and Program Officer Arthur Usher explains:

“We are looking at ages twenty to twenty-four as the age that is mostly in terms of knowledge base, but ages fifteen to about twenty-four is when sexual activity is really the highest. And so we really need to up the knowledge and awareness with that population. So that is a major area that we are going with. That’s the reason why we are targeting third formers—sixteen, fifteen—up to university and that level.  We have a broad range and again there are leaders so we are expecting that they will take back this information to their institutions.”

“What do you do outside of events like these to reach this vulnerable population?”

Arthur Usher

“Well for the most part we do have our promotional items, our ads, our outreaches that we do. We do social media as well as that; and we do have our mainstay activities. We are looking forward to World Aids Day on December first which is going to be a very targeted approach to what we doing.”
