Financial Secretary ‘Disappointed’

Joseph Waight

So, roughly eighty million U.S. dollars in ten days.  It’s perhaps the biggest disbursement that government would have made in respect of the B.T.L. saga within such a limited span.  To make matters worse, that hundred and sixty million Belize dollar payout is likely to impact the country’s financial reserves, as it represents approximately twenty percent of the foreign assets.  Financial Secretary Joseph Waight was present in court this morning where the decision of the CCJ was delivered via teleconference from Port of Spain, Trinidad.  His immediate reaction to the judgment was one of disappointment.

Joseph Waight, Financial Secretary

“I’m sorry, we just heard the judgment.  We have to digest it, okay.”

Isani Cayetano

“Can we get your initial reaction at least?”

Joseph Waight

“Disappointment.  Disappointment.  But we respect the court.”

“But finding the money, that’s important.”

Joseph Waight

“Well, you know, that’s an order to the Financial Secretary so we’ll see how we can comply.”

“You have to find twenty percent of the reserves.  That’s twenty percent of the reserves.”

Joseph Waight

“Perhaps a little more.  We’ll see.”

“Sir, how will this affect the country’s finances?  Eighty million U.S. in ten days.”

Joseph Waight

“It’s a lot of money.  It’s gonna have an impact, it’s gonna have an impact.  But we’ll have to digest it and see exactly what; we have an idea but, you know, it will take some time.”
