Will Youths Be Harmed by Marijuana Ease?

Other bills including amendments to legislation on land, protection of married persons, immigration and temporary residency and BELTRAIDE were also debated, with the International Banking Bill still to come this evening. But the afternoon session was mostly dominated by the debate of the Misuse of Drugs (Amendment) Act, intended to decriminalize possession of ten grams or less or marijuana and pave the way for the industrial hemp industry. In contrast to the House of Representatives where there was barely any debate, Business Senator Mark Lizarraga extensively quoted studies showing ill effects of usage of the drug on young people. His point was that before passing the Bill, the necessary structures should be in place and there should be a focus on curbing supply as well as demand.

“I focus on the youth because they’re most at risk, and because we invest as a country twenty-five percent of our tax revenue – twenty-five percent of our budget goes to the education of these children who are our future workforce, our future entrepreneurs and our future leaders, and we are damaging them by allowing this continued exposure to marijuana. We believe that any attempt, Mr. President, by anyone to profit from or profit while retarding the cognitive development of our children in this country, they should be severely punished – anyone from profiting from such. And while many of us are elated by this Bill or this Act before us, it would seem that all the scientific and medical researchers’ warnings and caveats on the young are relegated to a passing thought. And again we are going to be chastised for raising this urgent matter – I am sure that the Attorney General will have his way with me in a little bit – but I stand ready to take it!”
