Hernandez Can’t Be Beat; He Won Regular Tender over 2 Other Contractors

Imer Hernandez

Now Imer Hernandez’s company has been awarded numerous contracts for multimillion dollar projects in past years. Back in 2014, the Prime Minister had to defend Hernandez’s work because many considered it sub-standard. In one instance, he was threatened with court action by the Orange Walk Town Council after he was paid monies for infrastructural work on the San Antonio Road but didn’t complete it.  Then there is the faulty stretch of the Phillip Goldson Highway in Orange Walk Town.  But as far as we can tell, Hernandez won the contract to build the Belmopan Market Project. He was also the contractor for the recently renovated Sir Barry Bowen Municipal Airstrip in Belize City and also did works at the northern border.  On Wednesday, the PM described his work as “satisfactory.” Still yet, between the Fabers’ Road project and the Caye Caulker airstrip, Hernandez is looking to rake in over fourteen million dollars from government contracts. In the case of the Fabers’ Road project, PM Barrow said that a limited tendering process was used, but Tourism Minister Manuel Heredia Junior says the normal bidding process was done for the Caye Caulker airstrip.

“The awarding of the contract is always done in a very transparent manner. There is a bid that was put out where three contractors—because remember hot mix and chip and seal…only three contractors have this type of equipment. One should have been Imer Hernandez; Rodler, that’s Mister Flowers and Rolley Montejo – I am not so familiar with the name of that company. At the end of the day, two of them remained: Rodler and Imer Hernandez. And mister Flowers bid was for nine point something million and Imer Hernandez was for seven point something. But in all the classifications that were there, Mister Thurton was the consultant; he is the one that was guiding them together with the Chairman of the Belize Airports Authority, the General Manager and I think my C.E.O. and I believe we had somebody from finance also in that committee. So it was awarded to him. And then we started to look at how much monies in reality we can get from Social Security and we decided to downgrade it a little bit but not really the main feature which was the runway. In that bid, we had a terminal building, a fence and we had running lights. So at this point we have contracted him for the runway which will be wider, higher and the running lights will remain. The only part that up to this point we might eliminate will be the fencing.”

It is a known fact you can get a 6 or 8 lane highway for 1 million dollars per mile. Once again the fat cats are laughing all the way to the bank at the expense of the poor Belizean people. Whats sad is the Almighty has spoken and its a done deal. If it stinks like a fish it’s a fish.
