Mayor Calls for Transparency But Warns About Priorities

Darrell Bradley

The controversy surrounding the cost, as well as the awarding of the Faber’s Road Project to Imer Hernandez, is quite possibly the result of a lack of information about the mechanics of the tendering process.  It’s a concern that is shared by Mayor Bradley, who believes that it is critical to transparency and accountability.

Darrell Bradley, Belize City Mayor

“Overall, we need more transparency with relation to works projects in Belize City and with relation to all of government actions.  But one of the things when we tend to talk about transparency we equate transparency with bureaucracy and that ought not to be the case but that’s a significant project and as Mayor of Belize City I welcome that project.  Having said all that we would want there to be the highest confidence in the administration of government, that people feel satisfied that they get value for money so that when they pay their taxes or when they pay other government charges or levies or whatever it is, that they are satisfied that that goes to projects that are very cost effective and that will inure to the benefit of all residents of Belize City and the entire country.  So that that project is an important project. I think that you have to, as a municipality, one of the benefits, I think, of holding this chair is that you really have to be very practical and you have to prioritize.  If you were working with twenty-million dollars, you want to ensure that you get a certain amount of work done.  I remember we took a lot of criticism on certain streets where we were dealing with the carriageway rather than the drainage, but that’s because we felt that the carriageway at this present point given the resources available to the municipality that more people would appreciate having a concrete road to drive on rather than all of the finishes which we rightly cannot afford.”
