Mayor: Consultation Didn’t Matter to Me

Why was Mayor Bradley skirted by Prime Minister Barrow in favor of Councilor Deon Leslie during his consultations on the Faber’s Road Project?  On the surface it appears that the United Democratic Party is attempting to gain political mileage ahead of the upcoming municipal elections.  Councilor Leslie is responsible for sanitation, but he’s also the U.D.P.’s mayoral candidate going into 2018.   It’s the only rational explanation as to why Mayor Bradley was sidestepped during the discussions leading up to the road works.  Today, we asked the mayor if he feels slighted after being overlooked by the P.M.

Isani Cayetano

“You speak of the importance of the reconstruction project, but as the incumbent mayor do you believe you ought to have been consulted with in respect of that initiative?”

Darrell Bradley

Darrell Bradley, Belize City Mayor

“I think what I believe or what I don’t believe is immaterial.”

Isani Cayetano

“Should you have been consulted sir?”

Darrell Bradley

“Isani, I have broad shoulders, the fact that I wasn’t consulted doesn’t negate the fact that the road will be done and as mayor I’m elated that the road will be done because many people in the community want that project.  Actually, we were lobbying for that project for several years.  We tried to do it ourselves in terms of the remaining funding from the municipal bond.  We tried to get additional funding and so forth, so it’s a good move that the central government will step in and do it.  Was I consulted, was I not consulted, what is my view on it, it’s immaterial.  The material part is that that is a needed project that will benefit members of the community.  That notwithstanding, I think that it is still an important concern in relation to the issue of accountability and transparency.  That has a place in the discussion.  Notwithstanding that, the project is a good project.”

Isani Cayetano

“But you said that perhaps on a daily basis or frequently you are bombarded with questions from residents of Faber’s Road in respect of the conditions?  Correct?  So if that is the case then, as the municipal leader, it would be only fair that you were brought into the discussion.”

Darrell Bradley

“I can give you a response but I am saying that that discussion or consideration doesn’t enter my thoughts.”

Isani Cayetano

“So from a political perspective, might this then be a situation where your heir apparent, quote on quote, is being primed ahead of the 2018 municipal elections, as to why he is the one being consulted with and put in a strategic position, so to speak, ahead of next year’s elections?”

Darrell Bradley

“Deon Leslie is a sitting councilor of this municipality, he has acted as deputy mayor, he is someone who I have supreme confidence in relation to works.  He heads a portfolio that is sanitation which is a significant portfolio.  Was he consulted, to what extent he was consulted, all of that, I think, I would not give any kind of comment on, again because I welcome the project.”
