Mayor: “Appalling” Boulevard Should Have Been Questioned Earlier

Darrell Bradley

Mayor Darrell Bradley also commented on the Lake Independence Boulevard. As both a citizen and Mayor, he was appalled at the state of affairs. He indicated that it was emblematic of a systemic breakdown which must be addressed by the Government with support from the press. After years of contracts being awarded with few details being made available, only to result in poor work being submitted, Bradley said all must play a role in keeping the Government honest.

Darrell Bradley, Mayor of Belize City

“I can’t comment, because I’m not a technical person; I don’t know what the situation is in relation to that. But I’ve known for the past five and a half years, since I’ve been Mayor, we’ve had frequent questions that have come up in relation to projects, the awarding of contracts for projects; we have had concerns in terms of the output in relation to projects. And I think that media, Government, private sector – we need to discuss it from a systemic point of view, so that you the members of the media can be assured that if there is any problem, the problems are due to legitimate concerns. Again, I drive on Lake Independence Boulevard, and as a citizen I have to be appalled by it. And I would want there to be answers that would be provided, and I would want there to be sufficient systems, protocols, mechanisms and assurances given, that when public funds would be spent on any project, it would be spent in the most cost-effective manner.”
