After Previous Attacks, Keith Middleton is Latest Murder Victim in Jane Usher

Keith Middleton

There is a resurgence of crime and violence on Jane Usher Boulevard area in the Old Capital. On Monday night, there was another shooting which left a thirty-one-year-old resident lifeless. Keith Middleton was gunned down as he sat on the back step of his house on Mud Street. There had been two previous attempts on his life back in 2010, but on Monday night, he didn’t survive the shooting. His family believes a spate of recent murders in the area have a bearing on Middleton’s execution. News Five’s Isani Cayetano reports.

A deadly scourge of gun violence continues to haunt the Jane Usher Boulevard neighborhood, the latest victim losing his life in a hail of bullets as he sat on a flight of stairs behind his house on Monday night.  The Belize Police Department, notwithstanding a limited presence in the area, is, for all intents and purposes, powerless in arresting the rising crime situation here.  Thirty-one-year-old Keith Middleton was gunned down shortly after seven p.m. in the shadow of his Mud Street address.  According to Cherry Mae Howard, someone has made good on a threat to kill her son.

“From long time he di get threat, yoh undastand me, but he, I tell ahn just noh worry bout it because then ih dah noh wahn person weh give trouble and dehn thing deh.  But last night he deh ya and ih di try on shirt, I think I mi bring some shirts and I give ahn it, but I ask ahn, ah she “Weh you gwein? You look like you gwein out with your gial.”  Ih seh, “No ma, I noh gwein no way.”  And one ah ih friend cohn hail ahn so I seh dehn mussi gaan, but eena less than five minutes I hyah gunshots but ih close and me and my grandbaby dehn jump pan di floor and I hug up dehn.  But I noh yer nothing like nobody di call out fi me so I seh well none ah dehn no deh bout.”

Unbeknownst to Howard, her son had been shot multiple times to the upper body.  It wasn’t until she opened the backdoor to check on his whereabouts that she noticed him bleeding profusely from his injuries.

“When I open the door, my big son deh pan di step and when I haul up ahn ova dah because ih face full ah hole and ih jaw buss out.  Da right backa di yaad deh ih mi deh, but look like weh ih mussi mi di run dehn shot ahn eena ih back and ih ketch cramp and ih stay right deh so pan di step weh paat di rest a blood mi di drain out from ahn.”

Since the beginning of the year, as many as nine shooting incidents have been recorded on this end of Port Loyola.  Four of them are cases of homicide that are being investigated, with no update on the progress of any thus far.  The last door-to-door visit that members of the department conducted was on September sixth during a Meet and Greet session.

“They are telling us that they are seeking peace.  We do know that the residents are concerned about police presence; they want to see us more on the ground and they want to see us more engaged so that they can see and feel that sense of safety within their neighborhood.  Generally, their concerns are about the police presence and they themselves are trying to live with each other comfortably within the area that they are residing.  We have beefed up our patrols in the entire south side in terms of the spike in crime we have seen recently.  So there has to be some strategy put in place and that is what we have done.  We have strategically posted our officers in areas that are most vulnerable in terms of crime and we believe it is working for us.”

Erwin Rodriguez & Justin Hyde

That was six weeks ago.  Since then, a lot has transpired within the community, including the murders of Erwin Rodriguez and Justin ‘Ethdan’ Hyde.  While police are looking into the possible connection between both incidents, the latest murder, according to Middleton’s grieving mother, may be related to Ethdan’s killing on October ninth.

“Last week dehn kill wahn young bwai back ya, so dehn bwai seh somebody haftu go down for it.  But why pick pan somebody weh noh even heng out and gang bang, yoh undastand me.  I deh right ya di wash Saturday and di young bwai pass and tell ahn yo wahn dead pussy.  Now I ask ahn, why you wahn kill my son fa, you dah ih pa?  You di mind ahn?  He said that he noh di talk to ahn, ah seh but di next young man noh seh nothing, yoh undastand me.  Dis mawnin di young bwai weh ker my son da back deh, cause ih look like when he mussi ker dehn da back deh di next three young man done mi di wait pan ahn already because back deh dark da night, yoh undastand me, and I tiad ah tell he, I tell he yesterday morning, stop mek dehn bwai di cohn di call you because dehn same bwai weh cohn di call you heng out with di same one dehn weh di send threat to yo.  And so happen so done.”

Howard, like other residents of Jane Usher Boulevard, are desperately appealing for the authorities to step in since it’s only a handful of troublemakers wreaking havoc in the neighborhood.

Cherry Mae Howard

“The police dehn need fi do something back ya, yoh undastand me, because da one set ah people, anybody backa Jane Usher could tell yoh, one set ah people di do thing and dehn parents encourage dehn eena dehn simpleness.”

How can Belizeans go about their everyday lives with all the Crime going on around them? Belize, is a small country, so this should not be happening so frequently. Belize, is not a Huge country like the United States. It seems like Belizeans, has become immune the Killings in the country, but in the long run it could start hurting Tourism.
