As Franz Parke Begins Work, Opponents like B.N.T.U. Plot His Removal

Justice Franz Parke showed up for his first day of work at the Court of Appeal of Belize this morning.  The newly sworn-in judge is the latest senior official in the court of law to join the bench, despite the controversy surrounding his qualifications.  The legal fraternity has sounded off on Parke’s lack of experience as a legal practitioner within the Commonwealth.  The Leader of the Opposition, John Briceño has also filed a legal challenge against Parke’s appointment and the Belize National Teachers Union opposes his selection.  But what can it do to trigger his recall?  According to Smith, the prime minister needs to reexamine Parke’s employment.

“I really think that the prime minister should find some way of reviewing what he has done and to really think about how it will affect his people.  If this government truly cares about Belizeans and cares about the justice system then they will do the right thing and we feel that the right thing will be to not have Mr. Parke in this position.”

“Is there anything that the B.N.T.U. believes it can do?”

“As is normal, we will consult with our council, there are several things that can happen.  We are aware that a suit was filed.  We may decide that we need to do the same.  We may decide that it would be best if we just join forces with other groups who feel similar to how we feel and then, you know, we have a joint suit going on or we may decide or determine that there may be other options that we can take that will assist in this process.  So that is yet to be determined.”
