Even B.T.B. Surprised by Tourism Stats

The Belize Tourism Board says that tourist arrivals are up for the first nine months of 2017. The latest stats show that even the slow season registered increases.  According to the B.T.B., there’s a seven point nine percent increase in overnight arrivals for September. The arrivals at the Phillip Goldson International Airport only grew incrementally which, the B.T.B. says, is believed to have been impacted by the threat of storms. B.T.B.’s Director of Marketing and Industry Relations Karen Pike tells us more.

Karen Pike, Director of Marketing & Industry Relations, B.T.B.

“This year we have seen the highest increase of tourist arrivals, overnight tourist arrivals; with over three hundred and nineteen thousand arriving between January and September. In September we had a seven point nine percent increase of arrivals giving us a cumulative of eight point six percent increase over 2016.”

“Was it a surprise to the B.T.B. that during what is considered the low season you saw an increase as well?”

“It is a surprise especially because there were two storms that hit the region. What we did notice was that there was an increase; a smaller increase in arrivals at the P.G.I.A., but the northern and western borders had big increases so that gave us the eight point six.”

“What may have led to that increase?”

Karen Pike

“We believe it is the marketing that we are doing at the B.T.B., as well as our industry partners – they are doing a lot of sales and promotions to attract visitors to come to Belize and stay at their various accommodations.”

“How gravely were hurricane Irma and Maria impacts on arrivals to Belize?”

Karen Pike

“What we did notice because of the impact of those storms, there was a decrease in arrivals from the states of Texas and California. But the other states were still on par or had more arrivals coming in.”

Andrea Polanco

“In terms of the cruise arrivals, are you able to share the stats with us?”

Karen Pike

“Cruise is doing very well. As you know, it is up three point seven percent over last year, putting us in a great position to hit over the million mark again. For the month of September, we had an increase in different calls to the country which led to the five point eight percent increase for the month.”
