Does Imer Hernandez Have Airstrip Contract Too?

Kareem Musa

The People’s United Party issued a statement today condemning the award as containing no rational justification other than to, in the P.U.P.’s words, enrich select U.D.P. ministers and cronies and pad election coffers. They cite the similar works on the Philip Goldson Highway done by Cisco Construction for less than half the cited amount of the Fabers’ Road contract in 2016, at less than four million dollars per mile. But it notes that the Works Minister is linked to what it calls other bloated contracts, including seven million dollars for a section of the George Price Highway in Santa Elena between Loma Luz Boulevard and Hawkesworth Bridge and contracts to a construction company owned by his brother for the San Ignacio/Santa Elena Town Hall and Benque Viejo’s Marshalleck Stadium. But according to Kareem Musa, there is yet another contract out for Hernandez – the Caye Caulker airstrip recently abandoned by the major local airlines, whom the Belize Airports Authority is said to be bankrolling with Social Security money.

“We are getting information now, that Imer Hernandez was also selected to do the Caye Caulker runway for eight million dollars. Now I stand to be corrected, so they can respond to me if I’m just saying that’s information, they can correct me if they would. But I’m getting information that he got it for eight million dollars, a much shorter runway than San Pedro which was done for three million dollars. So you just have to do math here, it’s very easy math, that eight million dollars for a Caye Caulker runway that’s shorter than the San Pedro runway which was only three million. So yes, there’s a long list of other works that are highly suspect at this time.”

Also at the briefing, questions were raised as to whether a certain government minister owned the gas station being built at the corner of Fabers’ Road and the Highway, across from Chetumal Boulevard.
