Police Chase Clues but Activists Bunker Down after Albert Cattouse ‘Hit’

Albert Cattouse

The activist community is shaken by the Thursday night execution of seventy-two-year-old Albert Cattouse.  The taxi operator was gunned down with a single shot to the head inside his Lincoln Town Car on Hicatee Street behind Rogers’ Stadium. His family is preparing for his funeral this coming Saturday and police have begun an extensive investigation centering on surveillance footage from the area. A five thousand dollar reward from the Belize Leaders for Social Justice headed by Moses Sulph is in effect and tips have been coming in fast and furious. But as much as they hate to believe it, credible sources have told COLA’s Geovannie Brackett that Cattouse was intended to be an example, his death a warning to the community. It is a message that Brackett says he has gotten loud and clear, but he told News Five that he leans on a higher power for his personal security.

“We believe that this is a high-profile execution hit, that requires all the Government’s resources and energy. Just the mere fact there’s a lot of cloudy areas around it. You asked about the conclusion – the conclusion of the activist community [is that] this was a hit. Many of the activist community believe strongly that this was a message sent to the community to strike fear, and to test – the information that has come to us, the rationale behind it – Mr. Cattouse was an easier target than many of us, because of the nature of his job. And information to COLA is that the rationale behind it is to use him as the guinea pig, so to speak; use him as an example to see what reaction the public would give, in order for future hits. I’m saying that this is information that is coming to us. I don’t want to use Mr. Cattouse’s death as a political stunt, to get public mileage or jump all over the place, but I can only tell you the word that is coming to us. And so we would hate to think that is the case, and that is the reason why the Police Department needs to address this matter. In my earlier advocacy, I had vehicles following me; I had emails coming to me – Louis [Wade] was right there when I showed him. I’ve been walking around knowing that anything can happen; Louis has a high alert on his life. So the long and short of it is, I agree – I think it was George Price who once said, “Who can stop a determined assassin?” So we are not afraid. Safety comes from God. And if the Lord can’t protect us then there’s not a security force that can protect us. So any devil that wish to unleash their wrath, then we rely on the Lord, for he says vengeance is his.”
