Christopher Roggema’s Decomposing Body Found

The badly decomposed body of sixty-nine-year-old Christoffer Jan Roggema was found today in some high bushes in Saint Margaret Village. The Norwegian- Belizean businessman went missing on Monday while out scouting for a piece of property to build a business. According to close friend, Jaime Perez, who has known Roggema for more than fifteen years, the businessman was not feeling well when he went out to look at a property located off the highway, despite suggestions that he stayed in that day. While checking out the piece of land, he became very tired so the persons accompanying left him waiting at an area to take the vehicle closer to him. When the persons returned, Roggema was gone; they were able to hear him, but couldn’t find him due to the vegetation in the area. As we told you on Thursday, a search party was able to establish Roggema’s foot prints near a creek and so they returned today with more persons on the ground. Eight volunteers led by Walter Santos of the Belize School of Outdoor Leadership Training, along with seven B.D.F. soldiers and a police officer went looking for Roggema and just after noon his body was found.  We spoke with Jaime Perez who shared what he knew of the discovery; he doesn’t suspect foul play simply because Roggema was not in good health.

On the Phone: Jaime Perez, Friend of Deceased

“Basically they found him around twelve o’clock or so today.”

Andrea Polanco

“Did they say to you which area he was found?”

On the Phone: Jaime Perez

“The area that they found him is about a hundred yards from the area that he was missing.”

Andrea Polanco

“Is this area – does it have a lot of bush or a lot of trees?”

On the Phone: Jaime Perez

“A lot of grass. It is not a high jungle – it was just a lot of high grass. According to Walter he was found lying down on the grass – that is all I got – but they found him because of a strong smell because he was already decomposing.”

Andrea Polanco

“So, he was already decomposing – so they feel like he probably died maybe two or so days ago?”

On the Phone: Jaime Perez

“I do believe that he died on the same day because the body was decomposing. What happened that Mister Chris had been having a strong cough from last week – for a whole week he was sick and he was in bed I was close by him asking him to take his medicine and food. He was not in the condition to go to the jungle – but on Monday we had a strong sun heat and in the area the grass is about six feet high so I believe what happened he got so tired and couldn’t breathe through the grass so I do believe he died on the same time.”
