Regular gas price down, but shy of previous levels

The response from the Government of Belize to protests over record gas prices came today with a statement announcing a decrease of eighty-four cents in Belize City for regular gas, taking effect at midnight. Protestors led by the Belize Leaders for Social Justice and including the top leadership of both the People’s United Party and Belize Progressive Party demanded a steep reduction in fuel prices, but this decrease does not even take the price to previous levels. The price will be ten dollars twenty-nine cents, down from eleven dollars and thirteen cents. But the new price is still eight cents higher than the price at the time that regular gas increased on September nineteenth by ninety-two cents. The government takes credit for the reduction which it says is due to a number of negative factors affecting the acquisition cost of fuel supplied to Belize. It also forecasts corresponding decreases for premium gasoline, now at eleven dollars and ninety-two cents, and diesel, now at nine dollars and sixty-three cents, as well as the less-used kerosene. The former is as soon as the next shipment arrives later this month.
