Senior citizens celebrate LIFE on Casuarina Street

Senior citizens gathered today on Casuarina Street in Belize City to show off their talents. Through the Living Independently In Full Existence – an organization called LIFE – the seniors have put their skills to make bags, cards, decorated vases, jewelry and other crafts for sale. In celebration of seniors’ week, they held an exhibition to showcase that there is no age limit to creativity and talent. Here’s a look at some of the crafts the southside ladies made.

“Today, Friday, we had our open day. Because like on Thursdays our seniors gather and have their craft day so today we are exhibiting some of those crafts. So, we had breads, buns, rice and beans; we had their bags, bottles, wine battle crafts, cards, pillows and a whole amount of stuff that we got to showcase to the community today.”

“And these things that they are showcasing today – they are also selling to make a little money?”

Sister Carlette Gentle

“Yes. Definitely. We are trying to help them get a little income. We at LIFE provide the materials and they offer their services in order to make it; so whenever we get the money back we just take the money we spent on the materials and they get the profit.”

Andrea Polanco

“Talk to us about the members of LIFE; who are some of these senior citizens?”

Sister Carlette Gentle

“We work with senior citizens on southside; so whether it is Lake I, Port Loyola, you know southside is huge – but we work with seniors 60 and over  on the southside. When we first started we had to go out into the neighborhood to look for them but now they come to our office to say can I join the program.”

Andrea Polanco

“So, approximately how many of them are you working with right now?”

Sister Carlette Gentle

“We have about 92 registered; so it is really getting bigger but our space is minimal so we are only taking up to 100. But we already have a waiting list of about thirty.”
