How Do You Solve a Problem like Police Corruption?

Allen Whylie

The Police Department is also tackling continuous egg on its face from officers breaking the law with impunity. Whether it is extorting members of the community, or stealing the proceeds of crime like cocaine, or overreacting to citizen protest, it has not been a good few weeks for the men and women in khaki and blue. Today Police Commissioner Allen Whylie called on Belizeans to remember that not all officers are bad, and that they face the same temptations as the rest of us. He also noted that the department has not spared those guilty of wrongdoing.

Allen Whylie, Commissioner of Police

“Across this country we have over two thousand officers and a majority of those officers are professionally discharging their duties. Indeed, over the past few weeks I have indeed seen a number of negative things associated with the Department, but you have to understand that the Department is a department that comprises over two thousand different personalities. It is a service-oriented, people-driven organization. And on a daily basis, officers are out there performing their duties and interacting with the citizens: some of them are positive contacts, some of them are negative contacts, and so those persons indeed would not be happy in terms of being targeted by the law enforcement. But I can assure that each and every complaint that the department has received has been investigated and followed up. And where we have seen officers did the wrong thing and it has been confirmed, we have addressed those issues. And those issues have been addressed either by officers being criminally charged, officers being charged internally through the disciplinary process, officers in some cases being placed on interdiction. And because we are an organization that is out there meeting people, dealing with criminals, we’ll always have complaints, but as I said, each complaint, once it is made, we follow through to the very end.”
