Wasani Castro Avoids Charge after Apologizing to Police for Outburst

Wasani Castro

Another near brush with the law for Wasani Castro; he was picked up by police on Sunday at the ITVET compound where he was attending the annual expo.  According to reports, the elder son of Transport Minister Edmond Castro got into a verbal exchange with a police officer during which threats were reportedly made.  He was taken into custody and later apologized for his behavior at the event, before being released without charges.  Acting Commissioner of Police Noel Leal acknowledged the incident and said that the officer decided not to proceed with charges against Wasani Castro. We note that Leal mistakenly referred to the other Castro brother while the person involved was Wasani.

“I can confirm that yes, he was picked up and I have done an inquiry into it because he was eventually released and the information is that a mobile patrol supposedly was passing and [Wasani] was in a crowd and he was pointing fingers and one of the officers felt that that may have been a threatening behavior and he made a verbal remark to his supervisors.  And yes, [Wasani] was picked up.  The police was brought in and after it was found out in an investigation by a senior officer on both sides is that yes, [Wasani] may have been pointing his fingers but it was said to me that it was like to the general public and not to the officer in charge, not to the officer who had made the remark and the officer who had made the remark had not made a complaint.  I understand that [Wasani] apologized that if that is the way the officer felt as to what he saw, that wasn’t the intention and the officer accepted that and as I said, he did not give a complaint and when being asked if he wanted to make a formal complaint, his response was no, that he would leave it at that stage and hence the reason why there was no reason to further hold [Wasani] and he was released.”

Is this the norm now? You insult the police, disrespect the police and once you apologize you get away from a charge you are O K ? What type of police department do we have? Or is it that if you are politically connected you are given this choice. Every sensible Belizean knows that this is not correct. On another matter why does the police wait for a directive from a politician to do an investigation. The Compol dose’nt know his job that when a criminal act is committed they should investigate and why should they wait for a complain from somebody before they investigate as what happened with the forging of Mrs. Forbe’s signature?
The joke about the police is that if somebody tells them that a bag of marijuana is in somebody’s home they will rush to investigate without any one making a complain. This is the injustices taking place here in Belize.

Can I do that also and just apologize? Really it’s laughable how this police department are run by political strings and the worst is that when they do a press release they think we in general will believe them.
I don’t understand why or when will these departments start to act for the country and not for political affiliates benefits.

I call BS! The police department is under full control and fear of the politicians. This is not right!
