Queen of the Bay is for All

The spectacle that was the simultaneous coronation of Aaliyah Ysaguirre and Esmeralda Cal as Queen of the Bay 2017 endures as the topic of choice in just about every forum.  Just about everyone has weighed in on the embarrassment that unfolded during the official ceremony on the Tenth of September when National Coordinator Zenaida Moya crowned Cal as her own Queen of the Bay.  The fiasco has triggered at least two songs by well-known Belizean artists. But if the synchronized installment wasn’t awkward enough, Moya later appeared in the media disparaging Deputy Prime Minister Patrick Faber, who is also chair of the September Celebrations Commission.  He has since threatened legal action, but refrained from going on record about the incident; that is, until this morning when he opened up about the fiasco.  Faber says he has been reliably informed that Moya is attempting to register the name Queen of the Bay as a private entity.

“I am the September Celebrations Commission Chairperson and it was under that hat that I got involved altogether.  I stress that in fact we did not decide on who the Queen of the Bay was, the judges ultimately did that along with the then reigning queen.  It is unfortunate the circumstances that have happened, in fact you know that there were personal attacks made against me.  I will not get into that.  I think we should rise against the fray and we should certainly, I think that in fact was a red herring to try to move us away from the real issues.  What I can assure people of though is that moving forward, all in this country will agree that the Queen of the Bay Pageant is something that is a national treasure.  It’s not something to be owned by any one individual or any one particular group.  It is my understanding, and I have been able to confirm, in fact, that there have been moves on the part of Ms. Moya to register the name Queen of the Bay, which I think is absolutely, absolutely continuing to further against the wishes of the people of this country.  So I don’t want to get into the back and forth but I want Belizeans to understand that as the government and as the September Celebrations Commission which is responsible for our celebrations at this time of the year, we view the Queen of the Bay Pageant as our national treasure.  It’s for all Belizeans, it’s not to be dictated.  That’s not to say that the government wants to control it.  I believe it ought to be an autonomous body but it should not be dictated to by any one individual or any particular group.”

As soon as the headline was read, Zenaida Moya called this station to say she has never made an attempt to register the Queen of the Bay as her own. In fact, she says that several past queens wanted to register the name which the committee disagreed with. Moya believes that Faber is trying to destroy her character, and says she won’t tolerate it.
