Michael Modiri Headed Back to Court in Land Dispute

Michael Modiri

Justice Shona Griffith has set a date for trial in October in the long-running case of businessmen Michael Modiri and Bradley Paumen over access to land in the Franks Eddy Village, Cayo since 2012. Paumen is set to face a separate court trial over a charge of conspiracy to commit murder.  According to Modiri he wants co-existence and peace with his rival, but feels he will only get it with a judgment in his favour in court.

Michael Modiri, Businessman

“We put in the applications and we met with the Ministers: initially we couldn’t get any with Mr. [Gaspar] Vega; then we got an appointment with the new Minister when it changed to Minister Hulse. And he said that he’s been using that road himself for many years, many years ago; it’s always been there, it’s always been public, and actually he called it a five-minute decision: he said it should have been done already and he will make the road open to the public again. Because actually now, because that corner – point-four miles, there’s another ten miles of public road but it’s not public anymore; it’s controlled by a private individual. Unfortunately he was in his position for a few months and didn’t finish the job and left. Then we had the next Minister of Lands and she looked into it, but resigned and left due to personal reasons, and then now we have the next person who is looking into it. But it has been years since I have been in Belize fighting this man for access, and so we decided to bring it to court and let the judge make the decision.”

Modiri, originally from Iran and holding U.S. citizenship, is being represented by attorney Nazira Espat-Myles.
