Red Cross Solicits for Caribbean Hurricane Victims

The Red Cross would like your help to reach out to the Caribbean islands affected by Hurricane Irma. Over a million people have been impacted and countries are still assessing the extent of the damage. At this time, several thousands are without a roof over their head and are in need of food, clothing and other basic necessities. But the Red Cross is not asking for these in kind donations – they prefer monetary contributions to be made to the disaster fund accounts at the Belize and Heritage Banks.  Frederick Hunter Junior of the Belize Red Cross explains.

“Right now, the smaller countries, we are focusing on the Caribbean – the countries that got hit the hardest; Antigua & Barbuda, The Virgin Islands, Turks & Caicos, Anguilla – they really bore the brunt of the storm; there are accounts coming in from Cuba, as well.  So, the appeal that we have launched together with the international federation is to assist all victims, but particularly focusing on those who got hardest hit in the Caribbean islands. I think over 1.2 million people were exposed to the worst of the hurricane.”

“And what kind of assistance the Belize Red Cross would like to see the public give towards this cause?”

Frederick Hunter Jr.

“If it had been here, we would have taken any sort of assistance but since it is abroad we prefer cash donations and we have two bank account numbers that we are releasing to the public for Belize Bank and Heritage Bank. And the reason for this is logistics of in kind contributions – although they are very welcome it will be difficult for us to get it across to them. So, we are putting the cash together to prepare shipments of needed goods, materials at ports of supply or to have them ship to the places where they are needed.”

The bank account numbers are as follows: Belize Bank, 135-6480-101-2000 and Heritage Bank, 108-2665.

I would think twice before donating to the Red Cross. Facts coming out of Houston and the Harvey relief effort have not been very supportive of their track record. One report indicated that only $0.08 cents out of every dollar actually makes it to the victims. Not a good record at all.
