Business Senator Details “Minimal” Expenses

Mark Lizarraga

While there has been no public comment from the business and private sector despite being apprised of the Prime Minister’s letter, the Senator representing them on the Committee, Mark Lizarraga today criticized the decision as a matter of priorities. Citing testimony from director Diana Locke, the Senator pointed out that Government seems to value politics over making the best use of the limited resources available. As for complaints about the Committee’s spending, his breakdown showed that it’s not really all that much.

Mark Lizarraga, Senator, Business Community

“Priorities in this country for the most part, unfortunately, are given to those projects or areas that carry the most political weight. I was disappointed to hear today, for example, from the Director of Immigration that some of the items she needs to strengthen her department were not approved in her budget last year. And here we are in the middle of this very important exercise, and she’s being denied the resources that she needs to strengthen a vital part of our national security which is our identification documents. We still hear that we await allocations for the new passport system that is going to be identified. So it is disappointing to see how we prioritize the spending of our national monies.  At the end of the day, I make a hundred and thirty dollars every time I come here – that’s for my fuel and my time; they feed us a plate of food. Other than that we pay the press, whatever that costs to broadcast. I fail to see how the numbers that are being claimed can be justified; our expenses are really minimal; so I don’t know where those numbers are coming from. But I suspect that the clerk should be able – it should be a matter of public knowledge, I believe – that they should be able to provide you with the numbers that we’ve actually spent.”
