Explosive Found in Corozal Town

An explosive device was retrieved in Corozal Town over the weekend when police in that jurisdiction were handed a sophisticated bomb, complete with a remote detonator.  While an actual charge was not attached to the device, its complexity marks a first for the discovery of such contraptions in Belize.  News Five spoke with local bomb expert Brigadier General David Jones, who told us that while details of the recovery are rather difficult to come by, the explosive shows a level of sophistication that’s previously unseen in the country.

“The police was handed a device by some civilian in Corozal, I believe it was Saturday night.  The device was subsequently handed to me on Sunday morning, one of our officers actually picked up the device on Saturday.  The device is well constructed.  It had a capacitor; it had a sensor and a cell phone which denotes that it would have been set off remotely.  So this device definitely is above the level of what we’ve seen before in Belize.  It is something that can be placed at a house or in a vehicle and you can actually set it off by just dialing a number on the cell phone.  However, the device wasn’t complete, in that it didn’t have the explosives attached to it or the detonator, but it’s definitely a level of sophistication that we are seeing for the first time.”

“Do you know where in Corozal this device was found and any other information in respect of what it would have been used for or that kind of thing?”

“Sorry, I won’t be able to give you that because all I was informed was that there was a policeman that received it and he subsequently handed it over to one of our B.D.F. officers.  I have no idea as to why this person constructed this device or what was their intention, but it’s definitely sinister intention with the level of sophistication that they’ve had, because we haven’t seen this before and it definitely requires further investigation so as to prevent someone from starting to use such a device and become successful with it.”

“Do you believe sir, and the question is somewhat theoretical, but do you believe that this may have been something that emanated from outside of the country or is it that we are now dealing with local bomb makers, so to speak?”

On the Phone: Brig. Gen. David Jones

“It would be difficult to ascertain that, you can only guess, but it can pretty much be done here or it can come from across.  But someone locally can do their research on the internet and look at how these can be constructed and can do it right here in Belize.  It doesn’t need to come from outside.  At the moment really, we just need serious investigation by the police because whoever has constructed this device is in the process of practicing to do them and by practicing they can become perfected later and we wouldn’t want it to be done for sinister reasons and there is a need for serious investigation to find out who may be the person to assemble such a device.”

Corozal police are yet to make an arrest in connection with the discovery.
