Shutdown of surgeries in North delivers heavier workload to Karl Heusner

Holiday weekends often carry a greater load of patients for the national referral hospital, the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in Belize City. This weekend, that load increases because all surgery related cases are being referred there specifically for patients from the Northern Health Region – Corozal and Orange Walk. This is because upgrades are being performed on the operating rooms and maintenance is being done to medical equipment. For this reason, surgery requiring anesthesia is not available at either the Northern Regional Hospital or Corozal Community Hospital. The Ministry of Health notes that other regional teams are also being asked to pitch in due to the greater responsibilities assumed with carnival and the September Celebrations. K.H.M.H.’s public relations officer Tylon Tillett told us today that the Karl Heusner is designed for just this type of scenario, however if the load gets too overwhelming there is a possibility that elective surgeries for K.H.M.H.’s patients may be postponed next week. The public is assured that the Ministry of Health is working vigorously to address these issues so as to return the Northern Health Region to full functioning capacity.
