Man walks from Ardon Belgrave murder

After four years and six months on remand for the murder of Ardon Belgrave in March 2013, Akeem Augustine, is freed of murder. Belgrave was shot and executed while on a job site on Caesar Ridge Road, Belize City. His acquittal came this morning before Justice Adolph Lucas where the evidence presented by the crown was not convincing to establish the identity of the gunman. Judge Lucas told the court that after his perusal of the testimony of the crown’s main witness, Christopher Gillett, he found serious inconsistencies which affect the credibility of a witness and the reliability of his evidence weakens. He also noted that during the trial, there was no collaborating of evidence to support Gillett’s testimony regarding the identity of the shooter. In fact, only a witness who had to be treated as hostile in the trial placed the accused at the scene of the murder which was not enough to prove the charge of murder. Judge Lucas further added that another witness for the prosecution, Michael Young, had testified but did not place Gillett in the area of the murder so that he may not have seen the shooting of Belgrave. Gillett, however, told the court that he was at the worksite when he heard gunshots and saw his co-worker lying still on the ground. Having set out his reasoning, the justice found Augustine not guilty.
