JP Darlene Padron Insists that Amy Forte Signed Documents

Amy Forte

Did purported titleholder Amy Forte lie to Prime Minister Barrow and the media about the fraudulent use of her signature in the latest Andre Vega land scandal?  And how would she benefit from being untruthful? It’s a fluid situation that has many baffled, including Attorney General Michael Peyrefitte who is in receipt of a letter from attorney Godwin Haylock.  He represents embattled Justice of the Peace Darlene Padron whose signature and stamp are affixed to the deed of conveyance which formally transfers the title for the property in question on Caye Caulker to the son of Gaspar Vega, the former Minister of Natural Resources.  Last week, Forte, through her legal representative, wrote to PM Barrow, who is now the substantive Minister of Natural Resources, stating that her signature was forged on that document.  She went as far as saying that a handwriting expert was called in to verify that the signed name was indeed falsified.  Tonight, we have also received a copy of the letter sent to AG Peyrefitte in which Padron is claiming, in no uncertain terms, that Forte appeared in person in February 2010 to sign the deed of conveyance.  So it’s Forte’s word against Padron, and the Attorney General, who is charged with investigating the conduct of the Justice of the Peace, is left to hang in the balance.  This evening, we spoke with AG Peyrefitte and he told us that Forte and her attorney, Deshawn Arzu-Torres, are essentially both non-cooperative in the investigation.

“I did get a letter today from Mr. Godwin Haylock who is the attorney for Ms. Darlene Padron.  What had happened, I was in Punta Gorda last week when the news broke that there was an allegation that Ms. Forte, she alleges that or she alleged at the time that she was never the one to put a signature that appears to be hers on a document transferring the land from herself to Mr. Andre Vega and they never signed it in front of Ms. Padron.  I immediately instructed the Crown Counsel in the AG’s ministry who is in charge of JPs to carry out as much of an investigation as we can carry out.  She contacted Ms. Forte and her attorney.  She contacted Ms. Padron and subsequently her attorney and we have been trying to get statements from both of them.  I was aware that Ms. Forte had sent something to the Prime Minister, but as Attorney General, I was very concerned about her allegation, basically saying that a JP would have signed off on something for which she had not signed.  But so far, to date, up from last week Thursday to today, we’ve had none of them willing to give me anything official.  We have been behind the attorney for Ms. Forte, making countless phone calls trying to get her to come in and speak to me or to write to me, or to give me some official information as to what her position is.  Same thing with Ms. Padron.  I spoke to Ms. Padron’s attorney on Friday and he told me that by Monday today, we would, if anything were to be given by Ms. Padron it would be given by him today.  So today, true to his word, Mr. Haylock sent a letter to me that it is the position of Ms. Padron that indeed Ms. Forte came before her, essentially came before her and signed the transfer in her presence, in Ms. Padron’s presence.”
