B.D.F. Questions How Seismic Explosive Got on City Streets

A dangerous explosive used in seismic testing activities was recovered from the streets of Belize City on Saturday.  The charge, complete with a battery and accompanying wires, was found in the vicinity of Vernon Street.  The only piece missing from the device is a detonator, which bomb expert, Brigadier General David Jones believes is still in the possession of the person or persons who planted the explosive where it was later discovered.  According to Jones, the bomb is likely to have been the property of a company conducting local seismic testing.

“The explosive that was discovered, I believe it was on Saturday morning, I got information about it from the police department.  Subsequently, I went to pick it up.  The Saturday night we sent for it.  It is actually a live explosive used primarily for seismic testing.  It is a danger piece of explosive as well.  If anyone was in close proximity to it when it would have been detonated, it would have caused fatalities.  It’s actually about two point two pounds of explosive so it’s a lot inside that canister.  That particular explosive should not be on the streets of Belize City or in any urban area whatsoever.  I suspect that someone stole it and there was some negligence in regards to how those explosives came on to the streets of Belize City, but indications are that there are probably more on the streets of Belize City and those things need to come off the streets.  There needs to be an investigation done as to who was responsible for conducting seismic testing in Belize.  If they are still doing it, what were their procedures to issue them, to use them and to account for them because that being on the streets shows that there was some form of negligence in accountability.”
