If Detonated, Bomb Would Have Cost Many Lives

David Jones

According to Commander Jones, the lethality of the device should it have been detonated in proximity of civilians, would certainly leave a body count.

“The charge is complete, is intact.  There is a battery that is used as a power source to set off a detonator that would actually initiate that explosive.  All that was missing is the detonator which is the last thing that you would have before you set that particular explosion of.”

“From a technical perspective what is the blast radius for such a device?”

Brig. Gen. David Jones

“Well the blast for such a device, you would create injuries up to about  two hundred meters with something like that, injuries.  If you are within ten to fifteen meters there could be fatalities or even a bit more.”

“Okay, so compared to the grenades that were taken off the street that were found, and the ones that were detonated.  If you were to compare those and those were described as defensive explosive devices, if you were to compare those with this one, what would you say in terms of lethality?”

Brig. Gen. David Jones

“Well the difference with the grenades is that the grenades have a secondary effect, apart from the explosives inside, the grenade also has fragments which creates that extra lethality because it has some metal fragments in there that will tear your body apart.  So those fragments from inside the grenade are not present here.  It‘s just the raw explosives, so the danger from this is the blast.  So that blast that comes out will create that damage on to the body because it creates that powerful gas that provides that push.  So for someone standing close to it, it can break off your limbs or tear your body in two.”

The explosive charge remains in the presence of the Belize Defense Force until it is disposed of.
