P.U.P. Formalize Demands to Prime Minister

Earlier this week, the Opposition People’s United Party went after the Government, calling for among other things, the return of all Vega-titled properties and a full investigation and commission of inquiry as well as a case of misfeasance against Gaspar Vega. The Leader of the Opposition John Briceño has put this in writing to Prime Minister, stating that the P.M. has presided “the pillaging of the land resources of our country under the leadership of your colleague and former Deputy Prime Minister Gaspar Vega for his family and friends…which has been met with perfunctory acceptance by you its “a hotbed of corruption”….this is but the latest in the litany of corruption in your Government. Misfeasance in Office has been obvious over the years and you have done nothing. We have had enough.” The P.U.P. goes on to further accuse the government of deliberately undermining the institutions of oversight including the Public Accounts Committee and the Integrity Commission.  It calls for immediate production of evidence that the Mosquito Caye lands has been cancelled and in addition calls on government to support public hearings of the PAC and roll back investigation of returns of public officials filed from 2012. Earlier this year, at the Budget Debate, Caribbean Shores representative Kareem Musa discussed during his presentation the state of affairs under Vega, who was absent, at the Lands Department.

Kareem Musa, Area Rep., Caribbean Shores

“Madam Speaker, the Prime Minister is a trained attorney, and I can’t understand for the life of me why a misfeasance case has not been taken out against the member for Orange Walk North. As Minister of Natural Resources, he has presided over the issuance of titles to other people’s property, of property within reserves, which according to them he was selling to his cronies and family at a very low cost; sometimes as low as two thousand dollars. You see, Madam Speaker, it’s a very simple, unsophisticated scheme, but it’s a very costly one. Because neither the Minister nor any of the other public officers at the Ministry of Lands, they knew they had no authority to issue those second titles, but they did it anyway. And the simple scheme was that when they issue those titles, they then turned around and revoked them, shortly after. So the cronies or the family members would pay two thousand dollars, and then when their titles are revoked because they are naturally fraudulent, they are then compensated hundreds of thousands of dollars. It’s a very basic scheme, and I can’t understand what is taking the Prime Minister so long to take out a case against the minister.”

The most corrupt government in our history. Shame, shame shame. to this U D P government.
They said the Musa government was corrupt. This present government of Mr Barrow is far corrupt compare to the last P U P government. The difference is that there was more work available for the poor people. The economy was good. How can we put these corrupt politician again to govern our country again. No way Belize. Put country first.
