Gov’t Takes Up Land Demarcation, Training for Alcaldes

According to Coc, the Maya community remains optimistic in their expectation that this kind of dialogue will be the first of many, especially as it relates to the implementation of the order of the Caribbean Court of Justice.

On the Phone: Cristina Coc, Spokesperson, MLA

“We also raised and reiterated some of the main points of concern with respect to the implementation of the Caribbean Court of Justice order, recognizing that it has been almost the past two years now since that decision was given and very little substantive work has been done in terms of the implementation of this decision.  The Attorney General and the Minister of Lands basically saw the urgency and also are committed to ensuring that the delineation and demarcation of Mayan villages lands be a priority.  They committed to, the Attorney General committed to appoint a Crown Counsel specifically charged with the responsibility to look after the various concerns particularly with respect to incursions and infractions and wanted to make sure that we were aware of his commitment to move this along as quickly as possible.  The Attorney General also committed to the assembly of alcaldes that he is going to return on September sixteenth to provide training with respect to their statutory appointment, training with respect to their responsibility as local magistrates and as arbiters of the law and at that point then he would provide now the certification of their offices and so he will do the official ceremony for the alcaldes and we’re very, that was pleasantly welcomed by the assembly of alcaldes.  At that time as well, the alcaldes were asked to raise any further concerns that they might have and the alcaldes, of course, are prepared to have an open dialogue with the Attorney General at that time.”
