Councilor candidate will push for more social City Council

Even though Willoughby is not at the top of the ticket, his decision to focus his race on promoting a “softer social” side of a council appears to have some traction with both the electorate and his erstwhile opponents.  The council, however, focused on infrastructural and macro-economic gains.  Willoughby told us that he will continue to fashion that plan among his colleagues and says that if the party underestimated him at either municipal or national level, they should not do so now.

Philip Willoughby

“Both of us understand the social needs of our people here in Belize City, the residents of Belize City – they are vast, they are wide and it is great. So it is now our responsibility to ensure we create that softer social side for the residents of the city, especially our young people in tehse challenging communities, who at this time you see these new episodes of crime between our young men. We have a responsibility. I have said that I will continue to work with these social programs, to do my best to see what I personally can do and bring to the council to assist any agencies out there or government ministries for us to challenge the scourge of crime amongst our young people. So I will still fight that cause and I will still champion that cause. Maybe they see something I don’t see; but it is not that I don’t see, but it is what I believe and my belief is strongly backed by making a change and impacting people’s lives, and I will continue with that vision.”

Between his vote totals for mayor and councilor, Willoughby received more than five thousand three hundred votes, a supermajority of the ballots cast.
