Like Father, Like Daughter? Pickstock Rep Proud of City Councilor

Earlier today, we asked the Minister of Foreign Affairs about dubious campaign financing. Elrington says it’s not a charge that can be made against him since his political campaigns and those of his daughter Alifa are personally funded from monies he says he legitimately earned.  On Sunday, Elrington’s youngest daughter offered herself for candidacy on the United Democratic Party’s city council slate, ahead of the 2018 municipal elections.  She emerged victorious, and, to have the Pickstock Area Representative tell it, it was largely due to his popularity.  Here’s his take on the convention held at the ITVET on Sunday.

“I like to pride myself in saying that there is not a person in Belize City, not a merchant, not an Indian man, nobody can point to me and say bwai I gave you a cent.  Not a single on.  I’ve always found my own resources from the monies which I was able to earn and save in large measure.  I can’t speak for others and so I can’t endorse the sentiment you are expressing but I can tell you, for my own self, for my daughter, we did not get any resources.  As far as I know, from any outside source.”

“She came in second in the poll.”

“She did very well and I would like to attribute that to the popularity of her father, but I might be conceited.  What I’d like to think though, in a more serious vein, is that the amount of publicity that I get in the media makes it so easy for anybody to get to know me.  It’s hard for people not to know me and in large measure, but for what is being said, the experience that people have with me on a one on one is just the opposite.  How can they be saying all these terrible things and you are such a nice person?  And so I don’t have a difficulty.  I will tell you, yesterday I went out there at 3:30, quarter to four.  I didn’t go near the place and I gave nobody a single cent while I was out there, not a cent.  I went out there, voted, greeted people and went back home and that is always my style.”

Alifa Elrington garnered the second highest number of votes, with a total of three thousand, five hundred and seventy ballots successfully cast in her favor.
