Gang War Flares Up; Latest Murder Rocks Curl Thompson Street

Gilroy Martinez

Has the gang truce in the city fallen apart? This month alone, there have been as many as eight murders in the Old Capital where August has turned out to be the most murderous month for 2017. This morning, as early as eight o’clock, a man was killed near his house on Curl Thompson Street in the Jane Usher Boulevard area. Gilroy Martinez was executed after he had left his house to carry out an unknown errand. It is believed that the murder is gang-related, though the motive has not been determined. News Five’s Andrea Polanco reports.

Thirty-two year old Gilroy Martinez was shot and killed in this yard off Curl Thompson Street. The owners say they don’t know Martinez and have no idea why he was killed right in front of their steps. But from all accounts, Martinez was a marked man, but why? The family doesn’t know exact the reason, all they know is that he was threatened just days ago and they suspect that he was killed because of the people he associated with.

According to his common-law-wife Shanda Williams, Martinez left their family house here on Curl Thompson Street early this morning to return a saw he had borrowed. He returned a short while later on his bike but then he went back out again, this time on foot – but he didn’t say where he was going. That was the last time Williams saw her common-law-husband. Since Martinez was gunned down this morning, it appears that tensions have flared up. Heavy police presence – with street cordoned off is evidence that this murder has stirred up conflict among residents who reside here on Curl Thompson Street – this has incited fear and worry for the Martinez family. They believe that Martinez was shot and killed by someone he knew – someone from the area.

Voice of: Shanda Williams

“He dah nuh wah gang person. He go dah work and straight to home and relax.”

Andrea Polanco

“So, you think he was killed because of the company he kept?”

Voice of: Shanda Williams

Andrea Polanco

“Do you think there will be ongoing tension because of this murder?”

Voice of: Shanda Williams

“I think so.”

Andrea Polanco

“Do you think the person who killed him also knew him?”

Voice of: Shanda Williams

“I think so.”

Andrea Polanco

“Someone the family knows as well?”

Voice of: Shanda Williams

“Yes, I believe so.”

Andrea Polanco

“What do you do from here; is there fear on your part?”

Voice of: Shanda Williams

“Inna wah way.”

Police have two men in custody in connection with Martinez’s murder. According to Police, Martinez, who is no stranger to them, visited this residence twice that morning. On his second trip there was when he was killed. At this time, they have no idea what Martinez was doing at the yard where he was murdered. It appears gang related, and there was an altercation on Sunday night – and that tension remains high – so to try to de-escalate there is a heavy police presence and mediation activities underway.

Marco Vidal

Andrea Polanco

“What was he doing at that house, Mister Vidal? The owner of the house told us that he doesn’t even know Mister Martinez?”

Sr. Supt. Marco Vidal, Regional Commander, Eastern Division South

“Well, only they can really say. The information is preliminary. As soon as we have all the facts together, we will be able to give you a better position in regards to that investigation.”

Andrea Polanco

“So, you’re saying that that same house is the same house he visited right before he was killed?”

Sr. Supt. Marco Vidal

“Right.”

Andrea Polanco

“So, he made two trips to that house?”

Sr. Supt. Marco Vidal

“Correct.”

Andrea Polanco

“Is there anything to show, because the common-law-wife said that he was threatened; is there anything to show that that threat that they made just a couple days ago has anything to do with his murder?”

Sr. Supt. Marco Vidal

“It may have. We understand there was an altercation last night as a matter of fact leading to certain events that lead to the obvious this morning.”

Reporter

“Is it gang related?”

Sr. Supt. Marco Vidal

“I would say that it is.”

Andrea Polanco

“Do you anticipate any sort of retaliation as a result of this murder; because this morning the tension seemed pretty strong and high in that area?”

Sr. Supt. Marco Vidal

“Right. It is a bit tense. If you go into the area you will see some of the activities of the police in that area and we are also in consultation with institutions who were chartered with responsibility to do mediation intervention and they are in fact engaged at this time.”
