Belizeans Staying Safe as Harvey Wrecks Houston, Texas

Belize was spared a direct hit from what was then Tropical Depression Harvey a week ago tonight, but residents of the Gulf Coast of Texas have not been so lucky. The storm intensified to Category Four status before striking the Houston area late on Friday. The storm has since been downgraded to tropical storm status, but not before dumping torrential rain on the city and surrounding area, causing what the director of the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency has called the worst disaster in Texas history.  About one thousand Belizeans living in the Houston area are caught in the fury of Hurricane Harvey, but nearly all are safe according to the local honorary consul, Dennis Johnson. He spoke to News Five about current conditions earlier today.

On the Phone: Dennis Johnson, Honorary Consul of Belize in Houston

“I think this one surpassed what we have seen in recent times; the benchmark was Alison, the tropical storm that caused this type of flooding but that one was more localized; this one is all over the city, that all the drainage systems are overwhelmed and the waters are over their banks so all over the city there is impact. So right now the whole of the city of Houston, even the major medical center, is kind of incapacitated. From what I can see, there is nobody in danger; the services are getting to people, finding people that are trapped in their houses – in some areas the waters are up to the roof line and so they brought boats to get those people out. For those people it will be long-term recovery. But in general people are okay; there’s not [inaudible] in the streets and things like that.”
