Regional Officials Tour Belize to Address Citizen Security

Steven O’Mally

Across the region, the economic and social well-being of the Eastern and Southern Caribbean have been plagued by high levels of violent crimes.  Formally known as CariSECURE, short for Strengthening Evidence Based Decision Making for Citizen Security in the Caribbean, the initiative is part of USAID’s Youth Empowerment Services.  It aims to improve youth crime and violence policy-making and within the region through the use of quality, comparable and reliable national citizen security information.  Today, representatives from several Eastern and Southern Caribbean countries gathered in Belize for a country tour.  Steven O’Mally is the UN Resident Coordinator for Barbados.

“Every day we see reports in the media, reports of violent activities or criminal activities involving young people across the region and debates on youth delinquency, victimization and youth involvement in crime and violence can be heard, whether it’s in the halls of parliament or the corridors of schools or even across the fence between neighbors.  During these debates we hear a range of possible solutions and counter solutions to reduce youth involvement in crime and violence.  But how do we determine what works and how will we be able to measure that?  By the end of the tour we certainly hope that you will be inspired by what you’ve seen and we hope that the CARISECURE project will be able to work with you to turn that inspiration into positive actions that would improve crime prevention efforts and policymaking in the Eastern Caribbean.  So we really encourage the active participation and collaboration of all the delegates during this tour.  I will say we have deliberately kept the group both small and focused at a senior level, at a ministerial level, at a Permanent Secretary level.”
