Can Hike in the Departure Tax be Reversed?

Speaking about the BAA, there have been concerns about the travel tax that was implemented, particularly so for Tropic Air, which had some regional flights that they had to suspend. The Belize Tourism Industry Association has also issued a statement because the tax does not foster development of the domestic airline. It stressed for intervention by the Government of Belize in addressing this concern. While it does take into consideration tourists traveling to the country, Tourism Minister Manuel Heredia says that the issue is one for the Ministry of Finance.

“That issue will definitely have to be addressed not by the Minister of Tourism; in reality, that is a decision by [the Ministry of] Finance. It came to the House; it went to the House and if anything needs to be done, it has to be amended. Personally I was approached by the airlines, particularly Tropic that does the regional flight and they say that it has cost financially a big increase in their flights and that is why they had to… But in order for us to do anything, we have to look carefully at it and weigh the pros and cons because you might have the larger airlines saying why not us? Why only the local airlines? And that is at the point where we would like to weigh if it is possible or is it in the best interest of Belize or the industry. So that is where we are today.”

  1. Mike G says:

Tourism is our only sustainably reliable industry. It employs us and feeds us. We cannot allow GOB to keep taxing our visitors whenever the want more money (to waste). Belize is already one of the most costly destinations in the Caribbean and Central America. Just remember the story about the Golden Goose. Greedy choke puppy! (My favorite creole saying)
