Senator says G.O.B. must state position on respect for borders

Valerie Woods

According to Woods, while government at some point will turn to the people for a vote on whether the Belize/Guatemala territorial dispute should be taken to the ICJ for resolution, it should avow that Belize’s borders are indeed internationally recognized.

Valerie Woods, Opposition Senator

“All that I stated was, one: I commend Ms. Shoman.  She puts country before party and I think she has demonstrated it time and time again, particularly on this matter.  She set the record straight, which she has been doing and for which she has the experience to do.  What I am disappointed in is the reaction by the prime minister and it comes on the heels, if I’m not mistaken, it was that same day in the house meeting where, again, he goes after Senator Salas.  Now this has happened time and time again with the prime minister, he doesn’t address the issue.  He skirts around it, he diverts attention instead of calling out for what it is and that is what a responsible leader should do.  Denounce.  Reject.  And in this particular case Isani, this government is about to, has been working towards asking the citizenry to go to the polls via referendum regarding the ICJ.  At the very least, if you’re going to ask that of your citizenry, then at the very least assert to them with no ambiguity that Belize’s borders are internationally recognized.  There’s only one country that doesn’t recognize it or has issue with it, all other countries don’t.  And so with that I take issue and I’ve documented it publicly.  I don’t shy away from it, this is not a, it’s really not a political matter man, it’s your borders of your country.”
