Carpenter/Fisherman Murdered in San Pedro

Armando Lopez

On Sunday afternoon, in the heart of San Pedro Town, gunfire erupted inside a bar, just a stone’s throw from the Central Park. Thirty-four-year-old Armando Lopez, who was originally from Corozal, was the target of at least one gunman who pounced on him as he had a beer at the bar. News Five’s Duane Moody reports from San Pedro Town.

Around 2:40 on Sunday afternoon, shots rang out on Barrier Reef Drive, a main street in San Pedro Town. Thirty-four-year-old Armando Lopez was executed; his lifeless body found on the floor inside Winner’s Spot Bar and Grill, where he had just stopped for a drink, following the burial of his friend, who was killed days earlier on the island.

“Armando Lopez, thirty-four years Belizean carpenter of San Pedrito who was fatally shot to the chest in a bar on barrier Reef Drive on San Pedro. Since then we have arrested two individuals—one in San Pedro and one that was caught on the water taxi coming to Belize City and we are looking for a sixteen-year-old minor.”

Lopez was a carpenter and a fisherman. He was originally from Corozal Town and had relocated to San Pedro for work, up until his murder. He lived a humble life inside a room near the lagoon in the San Pedrito area. His friend and former landlord Pedro Gonzalez says that Lopez was not a troublemaker.

While there are two persons in detention tonight, as police continue to look for a sixteen-year-old minor believed to have been involved in this latest homicide on the island, investigators are yet to determine a motive for the execution of Lopez.

ACP Edward Broaster

“At this present time, the investigation is in its infancy stage. We have our investigators on the ground dealing with that matter; we do not have the motive at this time.”

Voice of: Pedro Gonzalez

“We really don’t know who is doing this kind of problem. I think the police need to put more cooperation in what their job is all about. So San Pedro, they know that this is a tourist island so they have to keep it clean; not only sit down in a chair and do nothing. A lot of people right now is frightened about this thing that is happening in San Pedro.”
