P.M. Concedes: Vega Land Deals ‘Is What It Is’

They were first mentioned to Prime Minister Dean Barrow a few weeks ago, at which time he claimed not to have seen them. But one hundred and eighteen leaked documents from the Lands Department reveal another land grab by members of the family of former minister Gaspar Vega on Ramsey Caye and the Spanish Creek area of the Belize District. While Gaspar Vega was still minister of lands, members of his family engaged in an unusual pattern of land acquisition which enriched both buyers and sellers. The Vegas were aided and abetted by their good friends from Cayo, the Banos family. While the Prime Minister seems willing to concede to its wrongness, he does not see the need for an investigation. Like what happened in Carmelita last year, the Prime Minister says, “It is what it is.”

“What I’ve seen on the news? Why would I look at those documents? What it is; is what it is. You are able to document that people on the face of it legitimately got land and that they ended up afterwards selling it to particular persons. I don’t know that there is any actionable illegality there. But the implications and the conclusions that you have drawn are not anything I will argue with you over at all.”

The P M is simply part of the corruption to its highest level. It’s time to go before 2020. We know we can not eliminate corruption completely but put laws that if found in illegal deed they should face the strength of the laws. Time for this bunch of corrupt politicians to leave Belmopan.
