CitCo Recognizes Top Track Athletes

This afternoon Mayor Darrell Bradley and several of his councilors hosted three National Team Track and Field athletes and their coach at the City Hall. The team was presented with plaques and cash before given a tour of the City Hall. Ashantie and Ashontie Card and Faith Morris are all young athletes who have represented Belize internationally. Most recently, Morris traveled to Kenya for the International Association of Athletics Federation Under-twenty World Championship. They have also competed in Central American and other regional games in athletics, bringing back medals. Mayor Bradley believes that the talented youths should be recognized for their achievement.

“I think that it is important as a city and as a council that we really recognize the achievement of our young people in various areas. I said in my brief remarks that many of the times we tend to focus on the problems. We tend to engage in negative behaviors and I think that one of the areas that we can have an impact and one of the parts of the solution is that we really encourage people who are doing the right thing. These three young people are really outstanding Belizeans who have made an impact at a very young age in the world of sports—in track and field, in jumping and in other areas of sports. And it was thought and felt that the City Council can really invite them to a tour of City Hall. We are engaging in some light refreshments and fellowship. We are also giving their parents a plaque to recognize their achievements in areas of sports and we are making a contribution to their education in the amount of two hundred and fifty dollars. Again because we feel it is important for us to really celebrate our young people who are great achievers.”
