1-Year Integrity Commission ‘a Joke’

Julius Espat

Formed last December, the Integrity Commission was intended to provide independent assessment of the assets of Belizeans in public life. But a few weeks ago it was announced that the Commission would only be investigating the declarations from the current year due to pressure from legal authorities and some parliamentarians. Anonymously citing two of his U.D.P. parliamentarians, Julius Espat said it was a deliberate attempt to sweep the potential sins of the other side under the national rug.

Julius Espat, Area Rep., Cayo South

“Because the Government was pressured to put that, that we need to deal with the Integrity Commission which is already in law, Government in its wisdom – and I think they leaned on ‘the red side’ as I was talking about – their wisdom said that they will analyze only one year, this year. Now how ridiculous can you be, when you have Ministers that mi di basically sell pool table and now have twenty buildings round the country.”

“Well, you heard what he said…”

Julius Espat

“I noh ‘kay weh ih sey because even the way he described it is wrong – you can’t get it from Government and give it to your daughter and that all of a sudden makes it right; you see what I’m saying. And then you have ministers in the other city of the west, that had absolutely nothing – not even own the shirt on their backs – and are now the most powerful men, owning the most wealthy sports businesses in the country and flaunting their wealth; I’m just giving you examples of two. And they can never, with the salary that they have justify what they had to what they have now. So it is ridiculous; it is a disservice to the people of Belize that the Prime Minister has said – and don’t make him fool you; everything they do is based on his instructions, nobody moves without him because that’s how the U.D.P. operates. And so now they are saying that we can’t analyze anybody’s record, only the one for this year – forget the rest. Yeah, you want to forget the rest because you want people to forget all the money that has been looted; if you were not fearful of it, then you would say, alright, let’s do it from the day when you got elected.”

Espat notes that the relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act does allow for fines to be issued to representatives who did not hand in their declarations on time or were untruthful in them.
