Lisa Shoman Tells P.M. to Reject Elrington’s ‘No Borders’ Comment

Wilfred ‘Sedi’ Elrington

Foreign Minister Wilfred ‘Sedi’ Elrington, in an interview with the media on Wednesday, once again raised the ire of many, including former Foreign Minister Lisa Shoman.  While speaking on the issue of going to the International Court of Justice for a resolution on the longstanding border dispute with Guatemala, Elrington reiterated that Belize does not have any internationally recognized borders.  It is a statement that he has made before, particularly during a press conference with O.A.S. Secretary General Luis Almagro in mid-March, much to the annoyance of the opposition, People’s United Party.  His repetition of that claim, which is being written off as utterly wrong, has prompted Shoman to write an open letter to Prime Minister Dean Barrow.  She calls on the PM to reject the utterance of the foreign minister since the statement itself can land Belize in hot water in the international community.  Here’s Shoman’s reaction to what was said in the news on Wednesday.

Lisa Shoman, Former Foreign Minister

“They’re more than regrettable, they’re outrageous.  Foreign Minister Elrington has been the Foreign Minister of Belize since 2008.  I remind you that is almost going on ten years.  He knows better than this and if he does not, then he has no business being the foreign minister of Belize.  I’ve never been as definitive about his role and his actions and his words as I am on this occasion.  I think he has passed the mark.  It’s a convention that former foreign ministers try not to criticize the sitting incumbent.  In this case I can’t follow that protocol and with good reason.  It is words that put us at a distinct and severe disadvantage if we have to explain to the international community that either we agree with what Sedi Elrington is saying and we don’t have internationally recognized borders or worse, that we reject the words of our own top diplomat.  I can’t see any foreign minister allowing those words to stand.  And I think more than owing Belizeans a duty to explain himself, he really has to walk that back, and if he cannot or will not then the prime minister has a duty to reject those words.”

But this man has been a problem ever since he was named F M . He himself does not believe we have a boarder with Guatemala. I wonder if he is Belizean or Guatemalan. The P M should have gotten rid of him long time. Does the government have a person with some brain to be F M of Belize? Come on Mr Barrow . Name another senator with some brain to be the F M. My fellow Belizeans Please ask the P M to name a new F M of Belize.

We have to go to the I.C.J. because we have to define our borders. The maritime borders were never defined, never demarcated, never agreed upon and the western border, we have conflict on that. That is why we have to go to the I.C.J.; it has nothing to do with the building of the road. – FM

Read carefully, no where does he say non of Belize borders are recognized, only the maritime borders are not clear.
