Don’t Let UNCAC Die!

Julius Espat

Belize is now a signatory to the United Nations Convention against Corruption, which was signed in December. But there has been no discernible movement to implementing its dictates and Cayo South area representative Julius Espat warned today that without a serious level of commitment from this or any future government, the UNCAC is toothless.

“That is meaningless, useless, if the Government doesn’t put laws in place to make sure that it happens. And so it’s another joke, but it’s one step forward. It’s like you hang the man, so you went to buy the rope but they have it in storage all the way in P.G., so it will take another five years for the rope to reach Belize City, then another ten years to tie the rope up top, and by the time you are ready to hang the man the rope is ‘dry-rotten.’ You see what I’m saying? And so we di fool weself, and we have to be serious.”
