Faber Says ‘Chin Up’ to Anna Banner-Guy

Incumbent Belmopan area representative John Saldivar’s slate came in together in the August thirteenth U.D.P. convention for the City Council, freezing out Anna Banner-Guy, who is left to serve out a second term. Banner-Guy supported Saldivar’s rival for deputy party leader, Deputy Prime Minister Patrick Faber, who was willing to return the favor.  Today, Faber said he still believes in Banner-Guy, whom he called a credit to his party and an example for Belizean women.

“I will say now as I said in my endorsement of Miss Anna that I think that she is a spectacular woman; and that I think that she is a spectacular candidate. In fact if you follow me on Facebook you will see that I made a post, not only on my personal Facebook page, but I put on the Deputy Prime Minister’s Facebook page – something that I don’t normally practice; I try to leave politics off the Deputy’s page. But I thought it so important, and I campaigned in that post not only for Anna, but for good quality candidates in general for these elections – for the P.U.P. and the U.D.P., we need good quality candidates – but more important for good quality female candidates. And I went on record in that post, and I go on record again today to say that in my opinion, Anna Banner-Guy represents those very, very excellent qualities that any party should be proud to have her as a candidate and we are grateful that she’s U.D.P. But I also uphold the principles of democracy; and so my colleague Minister [John] Saldivar and his executive decided that they were going to embrace a slate, that is in their right to do so and the end of the day that outcome was victorious. It is my hope that Miss Anna will see the loss – though I don’t wish to call it a loss; I think it is a lesson – I hope that she will use that lesson, the way I used that lesson some four years ago when I was first defeated in my race for deputy leadership, as a learning experience; and you regroup and you come back, even stronger.”
