Taiwan Helps Out with Back to School for Albert Division

Today, we also found politicians tying down loose ends in assisting residents with expenses for the new school year.  This morning, Albert Area Representative Tracy Panton received a donation from Taiwanese Ambassador Charles Liu.  A cheque for five thousand dollars, earmarked for the people of Albert, was handed over to Panton as the first of several donations to be made by Ambassador Liu to various constituencies in the days ahead.

“We are in the middle of our back-to-school drive and the ambassador has been kind enough to make a donation towards the back-to-school drive, or will be making today.  But more importantly, we are in longer term discussion with the ambassador via the regional cooperation fund to provide some more medium to long term programs in the Albert constituency.  We are in the process of developing these project proposals, particularly in the area of training.  We would like to institute a resource center for young people for after school support and also there is always a dire need for housing support.  So there is a delegation that will be visiting from Taiwan around the end of September and it is our hope that our proposals will be ready for further discussion with that team when they come here in September.”

“The kids, back-to-school is very important.  Education indeed, is very important, especially when the young kid, when they have good education.  This is their chance, this is the opportunity to have a better future, not only for themselves but for their families and for the society.  So that’s why I want the embassy, the Taiwanese government wants to contribute what we can to help the Belizean people and that is why Mrs. Panton said in the coming, later in September, we will have a dedication here and at that time of the dedication we will talk in details with Mrs. Panton.  We will find any feasible way or ways to hold workshops or seminars to train the people, to train the kids, not only the kids but young people or probably single [parent] families so they can have the basic skills, the basic technologies to start their own business.”
