Castro and Franklin in custody; police say Insp. Yearwood info was not official

At news time this evening, police confirmed that Jafari Castro and Gilbert Franklin are in police custody pending charges. The duo was detained earlier today in the south side of Belize City. Assistant Commissioner of Police responsible for Operations, Edward Broaster, told us earlier that the third suspect in the beating of basket ball player Kevin Brown near the Banana Beach Resort in San Pedro Town, James Young Junior, is also expected to turn himself in. The trio is to be charged with harm and Franklin separately with aggravated assault. According to the Department, they had to wait for an official statement from Kevin Brown to pursue the three young men. On Monday, the press questioned what happens to former member of the police media relations unit Inspector Fitzroy Yearwood, who found himself transferred, seemingly coincidentally, after releasing the report that first implicated Jafari Castro? According to ACP Broaster, the situations are separate and being dealt with separately.

“Sir, but it appears also that Mr. Yearwood was sort of thrown under the bus. The suggestion is that he was not performing his duties well, but then, there is an undercurrent that he was irresponsible in releasing Mr. Castro’s name early. Which is it?”

“The situation with Mr. Yearwood has nothing to do with the Castro naming. That matter with Mr. Yearwood will be dealt with internally, and I will not prejudice that matter in the media.”

“Mr. Yearwood, when he issued the report saying that the Castro brothers were wanted, he was in fact a member of the Police Press Office. Why did we have this conflicting information? He obviously had that information; the media had that information, but other members of the police press office were refuting vehemently that the Castro brothers were present, were involved in any way.”

“My final comment on this issue, with regards to that, is the fact that the Press Office, from all accounts that I’ve seen, stated that there is no official report against them at that time.”
