2 Primary School Students and 1 Adult Injured in Shooting on Ambergris Caye

Christian Espat

There’s more crime to report…a trio, including two minors, escaped grave injuries on Saturday night when a pair of gunmen opened fire on them at a woodwork shop in San Pedro.  Nine-year-old Jaheem Martinez and twelve-year-old Armando Bernardino Hernandez, both primary school students, are lucky to have survived an armed assault during which Lloyd Tyndall was shot multiple times to the abdomen and left leg.  The incident happened around nine p.m. in the San Pedrito area, when they were all gathered at Easy Does It A and A Woodwork Shop.  According to police, two men, one of whom has since been identified as twenty-one-year-old Christian Espat, approached the crowd and let loose a barrage of bullets indiscriminately.  The gunmen concealed their faces with dark blue rags.  During the shooting Tyndall was severely wounded, while Martinez was shot to the left wrist and Hernandez was shot in the right buttock.  This evening, Espat was arrested and charged with two counts of attempted murder, two counts of dangerous harm and three counts of use of deadly means of harm.  Assistant Commissioner of Police Edward Broaster provided the media with details of the incident earlier today.

“Sir, do police know what is the, how is the incident unfolded, why exactly?  Have you all established any preliminary details as to what happened?”

ACP Edward Broaster

“We have not established any motive at this time.  Nevertheless, we have two persons of interest in custody that we are looking at.”

Reporter

“Do you have any idea as to who was the intended target where two minors were injured?”

ACP Edward Broaster

“Like I said, we haven’t established the motive of the shooting as yet, so it is difficult for us to establish who the intended target was or is.  Nevertheless, on Saturday night we dispatched members of the Gang Suppression Unit to the island.  We will be beefing up and adding additional personnel on the island to ensure that the level of shooting that transpired in San Pedro some couple years ago does not reoccur again.  The two suspects that we have in custody are from the island.”
