N.G.O.s Say No Excuses For Re-Registration

The Belize Network of Non-Governmental Organizations has joined the call for re-registration even though it has been put off to next year. In a press release, the organization says the Election and Boundaries Commission ought to reconsider, considering the importance of free and fair elections and defending the right to vote. The first and last re-registration took place in 1997 and subsequent postponements even while elections have been taking place have resulted in a compromised electoral list ahead of the municipal elections and planned referendum on the Guatemalan claim. This evening Senator representing the N.G.O.’s, Osmany Salas, debunked two claims about the worth and importance of re-registration – that one, the Government can’t find the money for it; and two, that it is inefficient.

“We believe that this matter is of tremendous national importance; and when something is of such national significance and importance, the Government has all the right to request from the National Assembly that a supplementary budget be approved for issues of such importance and we believe that the re-registration exercise is that important, that it requires that.”

“Having everybody come out and registering again to vote, to exercise their right to vote every ten or twenty years or whenever is cumbersome; it’s not a process that is sustainable.”

“That argument might have a bit more weight if this is something that is required every five years or even ten years, but twenty years? Come on. That is almost an entire generation, alright? Twenty years is long enough. I don’t think that argument holds much weight given the time that has passed from the first re-registration up to now.”
