Murder Accused Nevis Betancourth Charged; his Family Insists He was Defending Himself

Nevis Betancourth

As we told you on Wednesday night, Nevis Betancourth was charged with the murder of Jose Castellanos that happened at a restaurant in Santa Elena, Cayo on July twenty-eighth.  Bentancourth was hospitalized since then under police protection; his arm was almost severed when Castellanos chopped him with a machete.  Betancourth’s family contends that he acted in self-defence when he shot and killed Castellanos. His brother-in-law Jimmy Dueck came to News Five today to say that they are sorry about what happened, but if Betancourth didn’t shoot Castellanos, he would be dead today. Here’s what he had to say.

Jimmy Dueck, Brother-in-law of Nevis Betancourth

“We are really sorry that someone lost their life. It is very sad and we feel for the family. At the same time, we are in shock because we felt the whole time that it was in self-defence that Nevis Betancourth acted.”

Andrea Polanco

“Why would you say it was self defence? From what we have heard from the witnesses there is that Nevis was never at this restaurant, he was called out to approach this guy and come after this guy?”

“Well, from what we have heard and know so far is that he went to the restaurant to visit his mom.”

Andrea Polanco

“With a gun?”

Jimmy Dueck

“Well, apparently he has licensed firearm.”

Andrea Polanco

“Is this something he just walks around with?”

Jimmy Dueck

“Yes he walks around with a licensed firearm. So, we have a photo of his arm and his arm was almost chopped off and when his arm was almost chopped off that is when we are made to believe that is when he took out his firearm and started to shooting – well he first shot a warning shot and then some more things happened.”

Andrea Polanco

“His mother called him and then he went there and asked who is this guy and then he approached this guy – that is the story that we have been told, so the theory of self-defence a lot of people are saying it is not true?”

Jimmy Dueck

“Well, a lot of those things – I wasn’t there and the public has a lot to say. I think the public wasn’t there and so I will refrain from saying much regarding the whole situation.  Nevis believes that it would have been his life and he is very sorry. We wish this had not happened but there is not much we can do now and we just wish the best for everyone.”
